This Year I Will Be A Proverbs 31 Woman

My New Year’s Resolution? To be a Proverbs 31 woman.

To Be A Proverbs 31 Woman

The Proverbs 31 woman has gotten a lot of bad press lately. People have said she is too much to live up to. No one person could ever DO all of that. It’s just not reality.

I believe some people have focused on the wrong thing when they looked at the Proverbs 31 woman. Perhaps they saw a TO DO list, but I see a VIRTUOUS woman.

I looked up the original language for “virtuous” in Proverbs 31:10. I was surprised to find that the Hebrew word (chayil) is not talking about moral character or doing good things. It is referring to strength like an army, valor, and courage. It is more like this popular song:

OK, I won’t become virtuous by learning to survive alone in a rainforest!  So, how will I become strong and courageous? How will I be a Proverbs 31 woman this year?

My Source

Zechariah 4:6 gives me the source for my strength:

Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit (KJV)

God’s Spirit must be my source. Being a Proverbs 31 woman is not about my will and my might. It is about His work that has been done in me. It is about being His daughter, His princess.

The doing is simply an outflow of who I have discovered I am. Just like the lyrics to the “Roar” song mention, I had to go through a journey to find my voice. There is still more to discover. But, who better to lead me on my journey than the One who created me? The One who established my voice and purpose from the beginning?

My works should be motivated by praise and thanksgiving, not complaining and grumbling about the TO DO list. This takes strength and courage to allow the Spirit to teach me. It is a daily resolution, not just a yearly moment.

Who can find a virtuous woman? (Proverbs 31:10)

Will you join me in being a Proverbs 31 woman this year? Let’s look daily to the Spirit to strengthen us, guide us, and teach us.

As virtuous, strong, valiant women of God, we will make a difference in our marriages, in our children, and in our community. This is the beautiful promise and picture of a Proverbs 31 woman.
