Literature Based Arithmetic

Ann Jonas

This book is a beautiful book that you read front to back to front.  Your students will love the optical illusions, and it will be a great time to discuss symmetry.

Read the book and explore how symmetry is used to create the optical illusions.  For us, we focused on the word “Symmetry.”

This is a great day to play with water-based tattoos which seem backward until you apply them to your skin.  Great way to demonstrate the reflection of symmetry.

Of course, simply putting a word or picture in a mirror will give the same effect.

We cut out the individual letters of the alphabet and folded them to see which ones had a line of symmetry.  For example, the letter O has several lines of symmetry where the letter M only has one option.
